I have started designing a Pokemon RP PW which is currently in the brainstorming phase. As I consider this one of the best RP'ing communities around, I'd like your opinion on something.

If you were to RP in such a world, would you prefer to battle with your 'pokemon' as dominated creatures, where you have no real control over what they do? Or would you prefer to 'transform' into the 'pokemon' as they are sent out, giving you total control over the tide of battle?

Idea 1

Pros: Multiple pokemon can be out at once, opening avenues for RP.
Multiple pokemon can be out at once, allowing for large battles.
Less likely to 'die' (black out) if you come upon a pokemon too strong for you as you can send out multiple pokemon to attack it.
Can be a trainer during battle and call out encouragement/taunts.

Cons: No control over the attacks used.
Very large opening for ganging up on players and pokemon they cant usually catch/beat at that level.

Idea 2

Pros: Control over the tide of the battle by using certain attacks to their best advantage

Cons:
No pokemon following you (unless DM approved, and those are not controlable)

Those are the only Pro's/Con's I can think of right now, if you want more I'll try to add some. Feel free to suggest any I may have missed and please post your opinion on one, or both, ideas.

Cheers,
Arinu

I'd rather have the pokes with me. Because transforming into one is dumb.

Just in case it isn't clear, the transforming is OOC. RP'wise your trainer will still be there while you control the pokemon that was sent out. You dont acctually turn into the pokemon IC, but OOC the way it would happen would be transforming (polymorph or the like)

My statement stands.

There is already a Pokemond persistant world out there, and they have it be a controlled summon, much like a familliar. You have no control over its attacks; however, transforming seems to be less productive for the server.

I would say first option but with a change, is that you could possess your pokemon if you wished to, like you do with familiars, and you could let them fight too.

@ BSMCG: Really? I did not know this. Would you happen to know the server name? And yes, most people are saying the non-transforming idea. I just thought that some people might like the ability to control the attacks and the tide of battle.

@ Earaldor: I've already spent over a day searching and failing on that topic. There is no way (that I can find. Also asked on NWN forums) to summon them as familiars to possess them. Nor is there a script which will allow the player to possess a summon. That was my original idea, giving people the choice to either sit back, or participate.

As for the possession problem, well, maybe each trainer could have like their signature poke. Like Ash had pikachu. You can adjust what creatures are summoned via the 'summon familiar' action, so just make a character creation lobby in the server where the trainer could choose which specific poke he wanted as his 'signature' one. That way he could at least possess that one. Plus maybe the signature poke would be stronger than typical ones, just by virtue of it being the main one used by any given trainer.

*smiles* Your on the same mind track as me, Nik. But that's part of the nity-grity details that come later. These options determine the backbone of the server. Determines how the server functions as a whole.

It'd probably be rough scripting, but you could always make the summonable ones react to spoken commands i.e. "Hyper Beam!"
Either that or a conversation, which may be easier, ala our system with the wand except with a seperate usable widget for each critter.

That's a pretty good idea Bigfoot. I've written it down. I'm going to take a gamble at saying that they'll be dominated, seeing as the talley is 8 to 4 (idea 1/idea 2).

I already have a way of summoning them, it was just a matter of how to have the game played. So thank you to everyone to gave their opinions. Feel free to PM me or write in this thread if there's something you wanna say.

Don't forget also you could even choose two signature pokemons :p you could multiclass as wizard and sorc, that would give you two familiars to possess. And if ever a script to possess other pokemons would come into play would be one, that the player could change the familiar he uses, like issues a talk thing he chooses the pokemon and the script changes his base familiar. I was once told that anything can be scripted, using haks yeah but anything can be scripted.

*sighs* I wish it were that easy. Wiz/Sor combo's acctually share a familiar, you dont get two. Plus there doesnt seem to be a script to change what familiar you have without going through the levelup.

Definitely the first idea if you are wanting it to be an RP server. Also, if you are serious about this, I would put some serious time into learning how to script yourself (if you haven't already) as opposed to using scripts that other people have written. The possibilities open up quite a bit if you do so.

I've done a course on C# and have self-taught myself quite a bit about the NWScript. I was asking for someone else's because I couldnt find or create what I wanted, and thought someone with more experience would be able to help.
Thanks though. :D
