Modern definitions: The states in dark red are almost always identified as being in "the South", while those in medium red are usually included. With less frequency, some sources may also classify one or more of the striped states as "Southern". The Southern United States as defined by the United States Census Bureau. What do you think, what states are really south?

It has to do with the states that seceeded from the union during the civil war in the 19th century. The US hadn't expanded that far west yet.

The top map is probably the most accurate, but VA should be deep red too. Not sure why it's not... seeing as how it was the capital of the South. MD and RI should be white too, IMO.

Maybe he was just looking at it and thought he would share it with us and see what we think. anyway...I'm from Arkansas..which is in the dark red on the top map and obviously red in the second..I wonder what that says about me >.> You all probably think I'm some redneck living in woods or on a farm lol.
P.S. It's pronounced Ark-can-saw! anyone who says different is wrong. >.>

I am a Texan. I say again. I-am-a-Texan. People who understand....understand. Damn Southerners have been trying to include us to raise the overall quality of the term for years. Everybody sing with me! "Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State! Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great! Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest....." **This message brought to you...MOSTLY...in jest**
