Early lifeJoshua Tannerman was raised on a variety of military bases and towns by his biological mother, Lydia Tannerman, and her husband, Scott, who was in the army. He knew from early childhood that he had been born before Lydia and Scott were married, and that his biological father was another man, but the exact identity of his father was never told to him. When he was nine, Scott was killed in duty, and Joshua and his mother moved back to her childhood town near London. Several months later, a strange man came to their home, claiming to be Joshua's father. Lydia confirmed the fact, and told Joshua the story of his birth.
Matthias Penward, the eldest son of an old wizarding family, had been taking a few years off after his education at Hogwarts was complete when he met a muggle girl by the name of Lydia Riley. They entered a romantic relationship, and spent several months together. He told her everything - who he was and where he came from - and promised to bring her to that world with him. Their relationship came to an abrupt end when, one day, Lydia told Matthias that she was pregnant. Clearly not ready for that level of committment, he had left her and gone back to his life in the wizarding world. Several years later, he regretted that decision and attempted to make contact and atone for what he had done, but Lydia told him to leave - by then, she was happily married to Scott, and wanted nothing more from the wizard who had knocked her up and left her to raise his child alone. And so he had gone back, married a witch from an established family, and formed his own family, though he never stopped scanning the muggle news for word of the woman he had loved.
Now, he had come back because of Scott's death. He offered Joshua a home, which was more than Lydia - who hadn't worked when she had been married - could properly provide, as well as education in the magical arts if he proved to have the talent. Together, Lydia and Joshua decided that it would be best if he lived with his father most of the time - with frequent visits back home - and he left with Matthias to join the wizarding world.
He was well cared for in Matthias' household, during the two years he spent there. While his wife, Felicia, was never overly fond of Joshua, she still cared for him like his two younger half-sisters and was never cruel. Grandmother Penward, on the other hand, despised Joshua for his mixed blood, and considered him an embarrassment to the family. The best times he had with his other family were when he would play quidditch with his cousins. Though they were hesitant to let him join at first, his skill with a broomstick and natural enthusiasm for the game soon convinced them to let him join in. He even managed to convince them to try muggle football a few times, before their parents found out and forbade the game. When he got his acceptance letter to Hogwarts, he was relieved to put some distance between himself and the rest of the family, though he would miss the time he spent with his second father.
Important PossessionsDoctor Doom - His Snowy OwlMatthias bought a beautiful snowy owl for his son when he received his acceptance letter, and Joshua promptly named it after his favorite comic book villain. Don't ask.
His First Father's FiddleOne of the few possessions he keeps to remind himself of Scott Tannerman, the first father he knew, is his fiddle. He can't play it properly to save his life, but he often can be heard - much to the irritation of his housemates - messing around on it anyway.
WandHis wand is made of Aspen, ten inches long, and contains a single dragon heartstring.
