Raised in an orphanage, he was contacted by Dumbledore as he neared age 11. Not a problem child of any sorts, he was rather on the quiet side and liked to read. His only magical 'tells' were rather low-key and easily dismissed by muggle caretakers.

In no way daunted by the whole new world presented to him, he took to learning all he could to overcome his late introduction to a life of magic. As he works his way through his first year, he has found a liking for potions, a class that involves both precision and a certain amount of creativity (though the later often results in minor disaster).
One particular instance resulted in a loss of points for Ravenclaw, as a spilled experiment caused a small tree to grow from the floor of the potions classroom. Conversely, his drive to achieve more than just a passing grade has earned him the occasional praise from Snape (such as it is).
