Where's that phrase "you bet" come from, anyway? Isn't that a strange thing to say, when you think about it? I think I use that a lot? Do I? Should I? I don't even gamble.

I'm glad. Gamble is bad for the soul. ;)

Quote:
"You bet" and other expressions such as, "You bet your life" and "You bet your bottom dollar" are shortened versions of "I suggest that you could bet your most valuable possession with absolute confidence that you would win the bet (i.e. not lose your money, etc.) When someone says, "You bet" it is the equivalent of "That's for sure."

I use the phrase "there you go" all the time, both when actually giving something to someone and when discussing more ethereal topics. I never once thought it could be odd until I visited my friends in England and they all looked at me like I had four heads.

"Where do I go?"
"Why am I going there?"
"What does this have to do with my beer?" <-- A particularly important question, considering how the average englishman feels about his beer.
