question: I realize that when one can apparate, a person can only apparate off school grounds and not while around hogwarts, i was wonderin why we cant apparate around hogwarts when dumbledore is able to as shown in the half-blood prince? |

Well, as Dumbledore says in that same scene in the Half Blood Prince: "Being me has its privileges." He is, after all, the strongest wizard of his time. |

If you read the books you would know. And Dumbledore... is Dumbledore, he does what he wants. |

Dumble uses cheat codes. ...and this topic is probably better suited for the OOC forum. |

I thought Dumbledore didn't apparate until he got into Hogsmeade and away from the school? |

I just checked, and at the end of HBP they do walk to hogsmeade to apparate in and out(on the way back, they fly on brooms). For some reason I remember someone apparating off a tower, but I might be confused with one of the movies. |

Yup, it was in the movies. However I don't think that's too far fetched anyway, since he would be in control of the protections at the school. The school is ICly protected from apparation, as are a few other places. |

Hogwarts' Headmaster is the Keeper of Hogwarts' security and security measures, as we've established for the mod through recent play. |

When he and Harry did fly back on brooms he knew how to lower the defences so they could get there faster. |

Jigsaw wrote: dumbledore never flew on a broom You obviously haven't read the 6th book lately or ever. When they left hogwarts they walked down to hogsmeade. They went close to the Hoghead and Apparated. Then, on the return trip they took Madam Rosemerta's brooms and flew up to the school |

Dumbles is the Headmaster. As such, the spells that make Hogwarts a "no apparate" zone are likely his to command. Now...why was he able to app out but not back in? I imagine it was a matter of degree. It is far less risky to poke a small OUTBOUND hole in that spell to allow him to pop out with Harry than to do the same allowing folks to come in. My opinion. Your mileage may vary. |

Just to put it all to bed. From Book 6, Chapter 27: Quote: “We need to return to the castle at once,” said Dumbledore. “Rosmerta” — and though he staggered a little, he seemed wholly in command of the situation — “we need transport — brooms —” “I’ve got a couple behind the bar,” she said, looking very frightened. “Shall I run and fetch — ?” “No, Harry can do it.” Harry raised his wand at once. “Accio Rosmerta’s Brooms!” A second later they heard a loud bang as the front door of the pub burst open; two brooms had shot out into the street and were racing each other to Harry’s side, where they stopped dead, quivering slightly at waist height. “Rosmerta, please send a message to the Ministry,” said Dumbledore, as he mounted the broom nearest him. “It might be that nobody within Hogwarts has yet realized anything is wrong. . . . Harry, put on your Invisibility Cloak.” Harry pulled his Cloak out of his pocket and threw it over himself before mounting his broom: Madam Rosmerta was already tottering back toward her pub as Harry and Dumbledore kicked off from the ground and rose up into the air. As they sped toward the castle, Harry glanced sideways at Dumbledore, ready to grab him should he fall, but the sight of the Dark Mark seemed to have acted upon Dumbledore like a stimulant: He was bent low over his broom, his eyes fixed upon the Mark, his long silver hair and beard flying behind him on the night air. And Harry too looked ahead at the skull, and fear swelled inside him like a venomous bubble, compressing his lungs, driving all other discomfort from his mind. . . . In the movie, however, I think they do just apparate back to the top of the tower. I imagine that was done to save time in the film. We tend to side with the books, since they are the "official" story. As such, apparently the Headmaster can work some magic that lets him/her disapparate out of the grounds. Dumbledore did this. He did not turn off the protections that prevented him from popping back in. ....or...maybe he did, but he was too tired to do the spell. Harry might not have been able to manage that. The hole that would have let Dumbles back in very likely wouldn't have been effective for dear Mr. Potter. Apparition doesn't seem to be very hard, but Harry had to get them out of the cave. Interesting to think on. |
