Something that's been rattling around in my brain for a while. What is the British equivalent of curfew, because curfew is American and isn't mentioned once in the books?

I've heard curfew used in British stuff. I remember an online game I played once called curfew, and it was very British...made by one of the television stations, if I recall.

And there were several mentions in the books to being out "after hours," which I assumed meant there was a curfew in effect.

There was a call to quarters in the books. Harry almost manages to get himself in trouble over it repeatedly. Mrs. Norris prowls the halls looking for students out of their Commons so that Filch can catch them, etc.

Basically, everyone under fifth year is expected to be in their dorm area after supper to do homework/socialize/etc. Fifth years and above were allowed to stay out til *gasp* 9 pm.

I google'd news stories from the UK and the word curfew came up a lot. What would they call it, now I'm curious. :)

That's just it; I can't remember it ever being specifically named in the books. Surely they had to refer to 'have to be in your common room time' as something at least once. XD

Well I've read both versions, I do not remember it being written out as curfew. BUT:

Professor McGonagall wrote:
Nothing, I repeat, nothing gives a student the right to walk about the school at night.

AND:

J.K Rowling: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 9 The Midnight Duel wrote:
“Excuse me.”

They both looked up. It was Hermione Granger.

“Can’t a person eat in peace in this place?” said Ron.

Hermione ignored him and spoke to Harry.

“I couldn’t help overhearing what you and Malfoy were saying –”

“Bet you could,” Ron muttered.

“–and you mustn’t go wandering around the school at night, think of the points you’ll lose Gryffindor if you’re caught, and you’re bound to be. It’s really very selfish of you.”

“And it’s really none of your business,” said Harry.

“Good-bye,” said Ron.

So ya, sure its not spelled out CURFEW, at least I do not remember it, but it is curfew. The word "curfew" comes from the French phrase "couvre-feu" which means "cover the fire". It was used to describe the time of blowing out all lamps and candles. Silly JK, leaving us with a mess just because she didn't write curfew, but meant it.
