See here for class notes, if you couldn't make it on but want to have your characters discuss class materials! Classes will remain posted here for 2 weeks after the class was run, at which point they will be archived and will be gone. Please do not save and distribute them to others after that point, this is not meant as a reference to all things WoHP, but rather a way to catch yourself up on RP that your character would have witnessed but you could not.

Topic: Basics of Growing Plants

Four things every plant needs:
Proper soil
Proper moisture
Proper lighting level
Proper temperature

Soil
Most common plants grow just fine in normal soil found in the greenhouse.
Just take a handful from the planters.
Other kinds of soil sometimes used to grow plants include:
Stardust Dirt - soil from Io mixed with stardust
Frozen Dirt - frozen soil from a cold region mixed with enchanted ice
Holy Dirt - soil from a churchyard mixed with holy water

Moisture
Plants we grow for class require a wide range of possible moisture levels.
The recommended method to water plants is by adding standard crystal or glass bottles of water one by one.
Aguamenti is learned in 2nd year and may be used to water plants as well.
Do not attempt to water your plants using Scourgify.
If you accidentally add too much water, you'll have to wait for it to dry out on its own.
Exaresco is learned in 2nd year and may be used to dry out too-wet soil.

Lighting
Some plants require partial or total shade, while others require strong, direct sunlight.
Our greenhouse provides a shadey environment, which shouldn't be a large problem for most of your early-year work.

Temperature
Some plants do well in very hot environments, and others require cold areas. Most require something in-between.
Our greenhouse is kept at a toasty 28 degrees, plenty of warmth for growing common plants.

How to care for a sick plant?
Examine the plant and compare to your notes from our text to determine where you went wrong. It may help to ask an older student to take a look as well, since they have more experience in the class than you do and may have an easier time diagnosing issues.
If the issue at hand is an incorrect moisture level, adding or removing water may be able to save the ailing plant.
Sometimes the planting location was flawed, or the seed was damaged during the planting process. If this occurs, you may have to start over with another attempt.
If your plant cannot be salvaged, there is a recipe for herbicide in your first year potions manuals.
