Post subject:  Server Computer Donation Pool

Our server computer is getting old. I am still running the same computer that I hosted my -last- server on, before WoHP. While it's still reasonably powerful even for today's standards, unfortunately it's out of date to the point that if something were to break, I could no longer get parts for it. Rather than waiting for that to happen and be up a creek, I would like to be pro-active and get the computer replaced. The server is also in need of UPS batteries.

I am planning on a i5 or an i7 CPU, which would be a step up from what we have now (Core2), as well as move over to 100% solid state drive which is faster (we currently have a hybrid setup). It would also get a bump from 1GB RAM to 4GB, and I would switch over from Ubuntu Desktop to the Server edition to slim down the OS. This should keep the server happy for several more years. The server computer is, has always been, and will continue to be 100% completely dedicated to hosting of WoHP. It's not used for anything else.

Unfortunately, now that I don't have an engineering job any more, I simply cannot purchase this. After talking with some of the players in game, I am setting up a donation pool to make this possible.

If we can get to $500, that will cover everything needed for an i5 system plus batteries for the UPS. If we can push on to $600, then we can get the higher performance i7. (This assumes current prices, I will have to verify later on as we reach the goal.)

I will keep a tally of the total posted on this thread. And if for some reason this ends up not happening, for whatever reason, any donation made will be returned.

I'm curious has the price increased or decreased as you seem to be getting closer it might be a good idea to check now - and sales ahead to see what changes may be on the horizon. It -may- be just a server computer but since computers always seem to rotate monthly at levels of awesomeness even on lower end - its worth keeping an eye on. Also I'm tallying up what my loans will allow me to give... stupid college its like black hole of money death and the only way to calm it down is to throw more money at it. - but I should have something.

Nick and myself plan on finishing this off, going for the i7. We'll be doing so tomorrow, I think- So if anyone wants to toss in a last minute donation, do so! Every bit counts!

I remember Calan mentioned backup batteries to help prevent exposure to power outages due to rewiring, storms, etc. Which is another $50-$100 iirc.
