Wandless Casting

This is not a skill that can be learned. It is not unreasonable to role-play the ability to cause magical things to happen without a wand, but it must be very unfocused magic, not specific spells, and must be generally weak without providing advantages to your character. Requests for wandless casting skill cannot be approved, as this simply conflicts with the realities of the world of Harry Potter.

Nonverbal Casting

This may be role played if you have taken the Silent Casting metamagic feat, but should only be role played for lower-level wand spells. It may be possible for a character to learn how to cast nonverbally without the feat (purely role played) but please use discretion. Generally, this does not need GM approval, so long as it's kept reasonable.

Learning Wand Spells

Some wand spells can be learned by simply role playing practicing them. Usually this will require another PC or an NPC that is teaching, or even a book from the library or on loan from a professor. After some time in the dueling hall with your dice bag, a trip or two to the hospital wing for rolling 1's, and you'll be given the spell. It is obvious that some spells require more role play than others, and some are illegal in-character and must be obtained in different ways. Speak to any GM about learning a wand spell, how you plan on going about it in character, and the GM will obtain the required approval from the Head GM.

Learning Unforgivables

Contrary to popular belief, unforgivable spells are attainable. In fact, they are not always the hardest spells to learn. The only way to learn them is role play with a GM. How they are learned is almost always unique, and depends on the role play of a specific character. There are a few things about unforgivables that everyone should know:

-Simply attempting to cast one, even pure role play, absolutely must have GM approval for each attempt. This is because the mere attempt can turn into a server-wide event. Role playing casting without a GM knowing about it in advance can lead to very severe out-of-character consequences, or an OOCly motivated instant perma of your character, depending on the situation. Again—inform a GM and get approval for each and every cast, or attempt to cast.

-With every single cast, or attempted cast, you risk permanently losing your character for in-character reasons. They are very illegal spells, very dangerous spells, and very mentally and emotionally taxing. Merely attempting the learning of these might see your character permanently lost.

-Approval to learn these spells will be granted on a case-by-case basis, and simply will not be granted to anyone who asks, and the reason for a denial may not be revealed.

Learning Animagus

Learning to become an animagus requires typically a month, two months, or more of intense role play with a GM focused on the task. In addition, a strong, established history of focus on transfiguration is required as a prerequisite. It is one of the most difficult spells to learn, and it's entirely possible that after the month or two your character will simply not be able to achieve it. Registration is required in-character, but you are welcome to role play an illegal unregistered animage.

The number of animagi on the server is kept small. We get a lot of requests for it, and unfortunately we cannot grant them all. If you are denied, chances are it's not because of you, but simply because there are already too many on the server.

Occlumency and Legilimency

These can both be learned, but are strictly role played as there isn't anything that will be added to your wand spell list. They are both very difficult to learn and may not be role played without going through the learning process with a GM. Legilimency, like veritaserum, is controlled by the Ministry. Legilimens must be registered in character, or considered illegal. This process is ICly invasive and must be heavily backed to be ICly accepted.

Legilimency and Occlumency are not spells that just any witch or wizard may learn. Most witches and wizards are simply not capable of learning them. An extremely strong history and character focus of mentalism with heavy GM involvement is absolutely required as a prerequisite before even attempting to learn Legilimency. Occlumency is a little easier to begin on, but it is still a very intensely RP'd skill to acquire.

Because of the intense GM involvement in both Occlumency and Legilimency, we simply do not have the resources to grant this ability to many.

Character-created Potions and Spells

A character making up their own potions or spells is very possible. Keep a GM in the loop.

Veritaserum, Polyjuice, Love Potions, Luck Potions

These are all fine to role play, but a GM must be kept in the loop.
