"I've been getting letters from the Academy," Daniel Kane said pacing in the kitchen, looking at his only daughter. "I don't know what right they've got to complain, considering your grades, but you're distracted, not doing the work in class, and generally being a nuisance. And yet you're getting straight A's..."

"If they were willing to bump me up a year or had some kind of AP classes..." Melissa said slumping at the table, and gazing at her mother while she cooked dinner muggle style.

"Yeah, I know," Daniel said frowning at the letter. "What these all boil down to is that you 'don't know your place'. I'd say you're not being challenged enough. Hogwarts obviously has a more advanced curriculum than the American Academy of Magic..."

"Couldn't I just go to the Salem Witch Academy?" Mel asked looking up at her father with a slightly sick look on her face.

"No. I'd rather send you back to Hogwarts. You only had one more year. Graduating from Hogwarts would mean that you could get a good job anywhere in the world. Even here, employers look favorably on a degree from Hogwarts," Daniel said, then leaned on the table, and gazed directly into Melissa's eyes. "Then there's the small matter of that apartment we bought you."

"You couldn't sell it, could you?"

"No. Considered renting it, but the only interested party was that Miriam Rovere girl, and I remembered how much you despised her." Melissa simply sank deeper into her kitchen chair. "Sorry, kiddo, but you're going back. I'll send a letter to Professor Dumbledor, and see about your restoration to classes. Maybe even restored to being prefect."

"No. I don't want that," Mel said.

"You may be the only one they'll consider, little bit," Daniel said, as he sat down with parchment and quill.

"Crap in a hat..." Mel muttered.

Mel sighed as she dropped the bags in the apartment that was her's. Just a few blocks away from the Green Door, and about one block away from a bakery. It was amazing how well her father's connections could come together to get her out of America. She was... apprehensive about returning to Hogwarts. There were some bad memories, there, but... It was one of the few places she felt truly happy.

It would be nice to see her friends, again.

Mel was ecstatic, happily skipping about the Entry Hall. She then ran to Hogsmeade, visiting Honeydukes, and stocking up on candy. She then ran to Scrivenshafts, and bought up some letters.

Melissa then began to send the candy and notes to Angerona's room. Letters saying "thank you", "I love you", and "I will try to be worthy of this gift you have given me". The candy she sent with the letters. Mel ran out of candy before she ran out of letters. So she went to Diagon Alley and bought up flowers, and stopped by Eylops, picking up some mice for her overworked owl.

Once got back to the dorms she began sending the flowers with the rest of her affectionate notes. Once she ran out of flowers and notes, she gave her owl the mice to thank him for the repeated trips.

Melissa then sighed, and smiled, feeling truly content and happy for the first time in months. Her last letter was the most heartfelt.

Melissa Kane wrote:
My dearest Angerona,

I know I'm sounding like a broken record, but I have to say it again: Thank you so very much. You have given me the rarest and most valuable treasure that I could have gotten from you. You gave me a second chance. I will be working extra hard to be worthy of this gift, and to restore your faith in me. I will not let you down again. I will not screw this up. I did not deserve this gift, and I will never be worthy of you. So, once again, I have to say thank you from the top to the bottom of my heart.

I love you very much.

Yours always,
Mel
