Post subject: | Emily Jade Hodgkins- Expectations of a Schoolgirl. |
Emily and her twin brother Julian as babies. Emily-Jade and her twin brother, Julian Frederick were born on April the fifth to Gareth and Joanna Hodgkins, in Wokingham, Berkshire. They have one sibling, a sister named Abigail Marie who was ten at the time of their birth. After falling pregnant easily with Abigail their parents found it extremely difficult to conceive the twins, meaning they considered them a miracle of sorts, Emily was always her fathers little angel, unable to do a thing wrong in his eyes while managing to upset her mother with every word and action. Her brother Julian was born with severe learning difficulties, although these were only discovered because at the eighteen month mark he still hadn't uttered his first word. Emily's development was pretty normal, she was speaking and walking just after her first birthday but it was discovered when she was four that she too had a mild learning disability although the only problem that she really had was that she was being unable to concentrate for extended periods, this meant it was very easy for her family to hide it, which they did and still do. The house Emily and her family live in. The family farm that they grew up on was rural and quiet, her father running his owl breeding business from the large barn that sat behind the house. Her mother, a healer working at St. Mungo's in London was a very strict women, she believed that children needed firm discipline in order to be brought up well. Joanna always seemed to be more dedicated to her work at the hospital than she was to her family, as a young child this bothered Emily hugely, almost everyday as her mother left the house to apparate to work Emily would run after her in her nightgown and plead for her to allowed to go with her, but she was never allowed. Always given some excuse or other about there being a lot of work on at the hospital or a hospital not being a suitable place to babysit a child. So after a while Emily simply gave up, resorting to spending her days playing in the garden with her brother. This resulted in Emily resenting her mother in many ways, doing everything she could think of to either impress her, or cause enough trouble she would be called home from work to see to her daughter, although her father never actually did the latter. Emilys older sister, Abigail. At the age of three, Emilys older sister Abigail fell pregnant, she was almost fourteen at the time and it almost tore the family in two, her father wanting to support his daughter while her mother wanted nothing more to do with her. After weeks of countless fights and arguments it was decided that Abigail would be sent away from the family home and not be allowed back. Emily was never told where her parents had sent her older sister as her mother did not want such a bad influence on her youngest daughter. After all contact with Abigail was broken, Emily's life pretty much went back to normal, the child not really noticing Abigail not being there as she was always away at school anyway. Other than that, not much can be said about Emily before her life at Hogwarts, apart from it was a happy and carefree childhood. |

Emily sighed, her face pressed up against the window as she watched her father and twin brother flying high on their broomsticks, a ball nestled under her brothers arm, a bat in her fathers hand. She'd have given anything to be allowed to join them up there in the sky, having fun for once. But she was forbidden. After a few moments her mothers voice sounded from the kitchen, "Emily Jade, come here or you'll miss everything we are trying to teach you!." Emily sighed, standing upright with a slight frown as she tucked her golden ringlets behind her ear and straightened her bright blue jumper. Her grandmother had come to visit and she was expected to be a good little Princess for the duration of her stay, Emily was very close to her grandmother, although she was never allowed to visit her in London, no matter how often she begged and pleaded with her mother to let her. As she slumped off towards the kitchen, her fingertips stroking the wall on the way, she forced a bright smile on to her face. Keeping it there was a struggle, but she knew that in order to get an easy life, she must and so she did, frequently. As she entered the kitchen, a scent of freshly made bread wafted to her, this being the most common smell in the house when her grandmother visited, due to her mother constantly trying to make herself look better in her own mothers eyes, which Emily found extremely foolish as her grandmother would never bake her own bread, she'd have her cook do it for her. Emily was never a stunningly beautiful child, but neither was she unattractive, her eyes being bright blue, her hair naturally blonde, she was always of average height and very athletic, although her mother discouraged this enormously, constantly pointing out that young ladies should sit and watch during the Quidditch match, not shriek as loud as a banshee as she throws her bat all over the place. Although Emily never paid too much attention to her mothers insistance on this, it did bother her that should she choose to play professionally, she would never have Joanna's blessing, her father Gareth would be thrilled, she knew that but her mother well and truly wore the trousers in the house hold, as was demonstrated eight years earlier when her sister had fallen pregnant while at school and subsequently been told in no uncertain terms by her mother that she was no longer welcome at the family home. Emily reached the kitchen after a moment or two, the smile holding steady on her face, as she stepped into the room two owls swooped in through the open window, an official looking letter clamped in each of their beaks. Her mother quickly wiped her hands on a teatowel and moved to the counter, picking the letters up after the owls had dropped them before flying back the way they came, as she read the names on them a large smile appeared on her face. Emily, who had stopped just inside the doorway, tilted her head as she watched her mother with a curious expression. Unexpectantly, Joanna held one of them out to her and Emily quickly darted forward to take it from her. Excitement rushing through her as she spotted the seal of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and tore it open. Inside were two thick sheets of parchment, one being her acceptance letter and the other being a list of school supplies, she jumped up and down, gleefully as she clutched both sheets of parchment and the envelope to her chest, giggling loudly as she did so. Her mother allowed this celebration as in her mind, getting into Hogwarts was an occasion well worth celebrating. Later that evening after her grandmother had gone home and a meal of roast beef with all the trimmings had been devoured by the family, Emily was informed that they would all be going to Diagon Alley the next day to get the twins school supplies and set up bank accounts at Gringotts for them. Emily got only three hours sleep that night as she was far too excited to even close her eyes. ((I'll be adding more to this soon hopefully, comments good or bad are welcome, thanks ) |

The next morning after she had slipped into the clothes her mother had laid out for her the previous evening, Emily ran down the stairs to the kitchen. Sitting at the table, her mother served her two slices of buttered toast and a glass of pumpkin juice before sitting herself down between the twins, clearing her throat and picking up her fork to eat her fruit salad with. In between mouthfuls of breakfast Joanna began to list off in order, the shops they would visit that day. Of course it simply had to be planned out, nothing would be left to chance in her mothers world. Emily let out a quiet groan as her mother began, frowning deeply towards her father as she slumped over in her seat, nibbling on a slice of toast. "Mother," Emily said as Joanna paused for a moment to eat a peice of pineapple. "How do you manage to turn one of the most exciting days of my existance, into a day that I now want no part of, in so little time?" Emilys brother and father snorted at this remark, Gareth actually choking on some pumpkin juice as Joanna shot a glare in his direction, prompting him to quickly cover his mouth and force a small cough as his focus returned to his porridge. "Emily Jade, her mother replied, what on earth do you feel gives you the right to speak to your mother in that manner?" The woman had turned her glare on Emily while she spoke, Emily knew this look and knew that she had overstepped her mark bigtime, all that was left to do was backtrack as quickly as she could and so forcing a brilliant smile, every single one of her teeth visable she sat up straight and glanced around, the smile fading a little as she saw her families expressions. "Surely you know that I was joking? I mean, I would -never- disrespect the woman that I admire most in the whole world, the woman that gave me -life!-, the mere thought of such an act is outrageous! I apologise if I caused you offense mother." After her little speech the girl turned back to her mother, popping the last mouthful of toast into her mouth as she smile grew again, as innocent a look as she could muster appearing on her face at the same time. After their breakfast had been devoured and the morning chores were done, the family exited the farmhouse, stepping out onto the path that was lined with all sorts of different, colourful flowers. After walking a little way down the path they came to a stop, both parents turning and looking down at the children, Joanna held her hand out to Julian while Gareth bent down and held his arms out for Emily, Emily being used to this automatically stepped forward and climbed onto her father, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck, her legs held firmly against his sides as her father quickly wrapped his arms around her and stood upright, nodding to his wife who was hugging her son to her. "See you in London dear!" The woman nodded to him and quickly spun on the spot, after a second or two a loud pop sounded as she and Emilys brother disapeared. "Daddy..." Emily began but was quickly interrupted by her father who was trying his best to hide a grin. "Now Emily, I know you don't like shopping with your mother. But this is a big day for her as well you know, she's dreamt of the day you and your brother would attend Hogwarts since the day you were born." A small sigh escaped Emily as she nodded and her father quickly spun on the spot, Emilys eyes tightly closed as they apparated away from the Berkshire countryside and appeared in a bustling street in central London, her eyes reopened as she heard other people around her, the large smile once again on her face. |
