How about using a graduating scale of progression? Maybe have a month for first year, two months for second, and so on.

That's a good idea, JB.
But a month starting would be too much... that'd take way too long.
Like... a week in first year. Two weeks in second. Three weeks in third. A month in fourth. One month and two weeks in fifth. Two months in sixth.
THAT I can sink my teeth into. And it would mean that there's still a nice 6 months spent between now and 7th year.

Whatever you guys decide on I think I can be cool with, I kinda agree with having some less time as first years because that RP does get a little dull.

... the DMs aren't going to choose our house, Shay. They meant a DM event sorting with possessed professors and such. You get to choose your house.

Well actually, Nik... you can choose, or let the DMs choose, it was an option Feargus put out there to add to the suspense. On an earlier note... one week is too little for first year, imo. I'd like to get at least a few classes in with it, and I don't want to wtfpwn the CnE team by making them do that in one week. I mean it's all up to them, even us getting the classes in general... but yeah.

There aren't that many classes in general, I didn't think we'd be getting many just to ourselves. =P And the way she said it implies that she's under the belief that the DMs will be sorting all of us like that.

*shrug* It's your roleplay, guys. The idea was put forth that it would be fun to provide the DMs with background info on the characters, and let the sorting happen when it happens. The thought being that part of the fun comes from the suspense of not knowing, both IC and OOC. Of course, anyone who didn't like the idea wouldn't have to do it.
Nothing's set in stone, and it's not our decision to make. This is for you guys to have fun!

Ok, to me, graduating in just a week, even for year one, sounds like the most boring thing in the world. And, it's not fair to people who want to participate but can't play on the server for 8+ hours every day. AND, that would have totally destroyed my ability to participate in an entire "year" of the group's play this week, since I have no access to the server for a week. AANNNDD, what about people who still want to get in time playing their other character(s) too?
Finally, why would it be boring to play even the first year for more than one RL week? Let's be imaginative and come up with some great fun RP ideas to fill up these student years with!
Imagine, a "Yearly" duel tournament in which your characer(s) duel other character(s) from the same year-group to get a Duel Champion for that age. You could duel with your firstie, than relog with a higher year character and duel with her/him as well! And, we could even let the lower year Duel Champions challenge higher year Duel Champions to have a Grand Duel Champion for that year at Hogwarts. Since everybody can't play every night, these duels could easily take several RL nights on the server to complete before everybody has had their chance to participate. And, when your character isn't dueling (yet, or has already done so), you could still RP being there to watch other people duel.
And how about a yearly Quidditch tournament between the Houses? With Quidditch games that actually effect the House points? I'd love to see more Quidditch games be played.
There could be a few hours on various nights that things are RP'd such as Halloween, Christmas, any kind of Ball, etc. There could be Group trips to various locations with all the RP possibilities that those trips could entail. There could even be silly games set up like Hogwarts-Grounds Hide-and-Seek (with nobody in any Parties), or Capture the Flag (Capture the House Elf?), or... anything else we can think of... and prizes could even be handed out. We could even, with GM help, maybe hold our own version of a Triwizard tournament (or some Hogwarts event of similar nature) at least once over the seven years these students go through.
And that's On Top of anything else that the GMs decide to do in terms of classes/events/adventures/etc.
The potential here for great fun and awesome RP is amazing. I'd hate to see it blown on rushing character's through the years just to get to higher levels.

Feargus was a firstie for a month and a half RL, I only started yearing him up because everyone was whining that he was getting behind them, lol. I had an absolute blast with him as a firstie....>.> heck, sometimes I wish he could go back, heh.

Well, we could certainly do a compromise of the two, and have a graduated scale but make it less drastic. Three or four weeks for the first several years, a month and a half for third through fifth, and two months for sixth and seventh or something. To be honest, we don't actually have to have it completely set in stone before we start, but I would like to have at least a basic time frame to work off of.

I think we should do a little more than a week for the first year. Not everyone plays like, constantly. (And yeah, I know first year is really easy to complete, you could probably do it in an hour or less if I remember right. ) Annd, like Misty said, people still have other characters they'd want to play. One week leaves very little time for the characters to get to know each other and for some Roleplay to happen. I would think maybe, 2 to 3 weeks would be better for first two years. And three at absolute maximum, a month is waay too long.. 3 weeks is even pushing it. Yes, no, maybe?
