I'd start with google searches. Obituaries. Etc. It's probably similar to genealogy research. It'll just take time. Or perhaps the agency that did the original adoption? Or just google "how to get birth certificate without knowing who my parents were." >.> I'll maybe try to research it a bit to be more helpful.

its a difficult thing, i went through it rather recently, (3yrs ago) it took me ages to track down leads. turned out my mother wasnt who i was told she was and my father wasnt on my birth certificate. if you know your date of birth & your birth name plus your parents names then you had more then i had. i was lucky enough to know my place of birth & i was in foster care before adoption so i managed to find the info i needed through the child welfare agency.
what do you have/know? Date of birth? Parents names? their ages at the time of your birth? or their dates of birth?

Were you adopted through an agency? If so, shouldn't they be able to provide the information you're looking for (name of the hospital you were born in)?

Erm....
Unless she's from the hill mountains of ... *Insert stereotypical hick town* ... they did record birth certificates from 80+ years ago. That said, doesn't mean it's easy to get one without an ID or data.
Without getting into too much personal questioning, I'm pretty confused. I assumed this was a question from you on behalf of a friend. If not, I'm sorry to hear about your dad dieing...???

your elderly friend should be able to obtain a new copy of her birth certificate. having had a copy before she should know everything she needs to reapply for one.
as for you, the things youll need to have to apply for one/find out. your birth name: (amusing your name was changed when you were adopted like mine was) date of birth: place of birth: parents names: preferably their dates of birth: (this helps to make sure its the correct certificate.)
look though all paper work that can pin point weather you were adopted through an agency or privately. perhaps local lawyers could help?
try going to the hospital you think you were born in and ask their help?

inquire at your local police station or court house on how you'd go about obtaining the certificate then. they should be able to give you some answers..
