Depends on the part of MD. I can see how some of the southern/western bits, once you really get out in the rural areas, can be grouped in with some of the "northern southern" bits like virginia. But the part where I live is very not southern, except for Bawlmerese, which is just weird and doesn't know what it wants to be. And btw, RI is not red on the map. Were you thinking of DE, the tiny state next to MD? That's not very southern, either, for the record. BitexMe wrote: P.S. And we would consider Texas very Southern, having no idea what the f*** the "American Civil War" is all about anyway.

Yes that's not RI. I'm stupid.
Southern isn't only a direction in the US, it's a culture. It came from the time when Southern was a direction, bit in the hundred and fifty years that expanded the US west, the original South isn't the same as the Southwest, or Texas, or SoCal, which have their own culture.
The US Civil War (as it is called in the North) or the War of Northern Agression, or simply War Between the States as it is called in the South (because it can't be civil if they are two separate countries)... had to do with the Northern states conquering the Southern states (to become what the US is today) when they decided they no longer wanted to be part of the US. It was done through military, and legal in the form of Constitutional amendments, which -technically- are not legal to this day because the Southern states never ratified them.
It was 150 years ago but the impact on the direction of the country, or what would have ended up being two countries, is obviously significant even to this day. In fact, the main foundational arguments in politics today are pretty much the same unresolved fight as was happening then. Only the specifics have changed.

Texas just has to compensate for the fact that Alaska is and always will be WAY BIGGER! Suckers!

You're either a northerner or a hillbilly hick redneck southerner. I kid, of course. A good way to tell if someone is a good ol' boy is if they ever say "War of Northern Aggression." If you want to see how the southerners perceive themselves watch a few episodes of the old television show The Dukes of Hazzard. If you want to see how the northerners perceive them, watch Deliverance or read the news.
