I've just learned about this today at my work through a co-worker/friend. After a search online, this is what I found (copy and paste of the article):

Harry Potter is getting pulled from circulation starting December 29th

by Alex on October 25, 2011 · 3 Comments

harry potter and the sorcerers stone In what might seem like a very very strange business decision, Warner Bros will stop shipping all Harry Potter theatrical film titles starting December 29th. This is usually not something you do with the most successful film franchise of all time.

Here’s the press release:

Burbank, CA – October 24, 2011 – Harry Potter, the #1 motion picture franchise of all time, will soon disappear from shelves, as Warner Bros. stops shipping all Harry Potter theatrical film titles (including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows™ – Part 2, and Harry Potter: The Complete 8-Film Collection) as of December 29, 2011 (moratorium does not include digital – Electronic Sell-Through & VOD – or games). The Harry Potter franchise has grossed more than $12.1 billion for Warner Bros. Entertainment – with $7 billion at the worldwide box office for Warner Bros. Pictures and $5.1 billion for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

As you can see, Warner Bros. have given no explanation for this but I might be able to help with that. You see, such a move just before Christmas boosts demand for the movies considerably. This means people have to buy the DVDs and Blu-rays before the 29th of December otherwise there ain’t gonna be no Harry Potter left for them. That’s short-term, in the long-term Warner could re-release the movies as events (and this is probably what they are planning). In the past Disney pulled similar stunts and it worked well for them so Warner Bros. are following suit.

Bottom line is this, if you want an original copy of any of the Harry Potter movies (or the entire collection) on DVD or Blury, you have to buy it this year, otherwise you’ll be left with bootleg copies found on the corner of the street. Warner Bros. want your money now.

I just purchased the only non-blue ray, 2-disc set (non-digital download), of Deathly Hollows pt.2 on DVD I could find on E-Bay. (I don't have a blue ray player or TV that can display it properly [540p rear-projection] if you're wondering why I bought regular over blue ray)

The collection is now complete......

I've actually known about this for quite a while, I think Luceus mentioned it in party chat at some point last month and I went out and ordered the 8-disk collection the next day from Amazon lol. I hadn't bought any of the individual movies so it was worth the 50$ to have all of them even though I'm broke and barely can get laundry detergent, it came down to like 6.43$ a movie and you can't beat that!

But once everyone has their copies, how many more sales are they going to make? A 3D version perhaps? Not a lot of people have or can afford that type of newer technology. They're just greedy.

People will put off buying them, saying that they'll buy them "in the future," or planning to wait until they end up on the $5 rack. This way, with the deadline, it creates an artificial demand for the product, since the supply is going to be cut off. Therefore, people who otherwise wouldn't purchase it for a very long time, or would only purchase it dramatically marked down, will make the purchase -now-.

And yes, of course they're greedy. Nothing new there.

I only ever bought PoA and I'm not going to rush out and buy the rest. I'm sure they'll be on T.V. eventually.

I've already got all eight, the last three on Blu-ray (Yes, Blu-ray, not Blue-ray ).

I got a few of them while they were on sale, including the last one, so I think I got a good deal. I don't really need anything else from WB.

*Notices the upcoming Batman movie*

I don't really need anything else from WB.

Damn ye, capitalism!! XD

I got a feeling they're doing this so people don't waste their money 'till AFTER the Ultimate Edition Box Set comes out. I hear that's coming out next year. I guess I know what I want for Christmas..

Oh well. All the more reason for piracy to exist.

I got all 1-6, but not the 7th, I told my mom about what's going on and to quickly get me the 7th film for Christmas, and she said that it was just a sales ploy, meaning they're only saying that to get more people to rush out fast and buy the copy, which I also think is true, all they want is more money. But I really want it though, Deathly Hallows is now my top favorite movie in the franchise.

To be perfectly honest, pulling a dodgy move like this makes me want to buy the movies less. Why should I give you my money when you obviously aren't considerate of your customers? I was considering buying Deathly Hallows, but now I think I'll just wait until it comes on T.V. and video it.

Oh I completely agree with you on this point but I'd rather have 1 complete set than find out I have to wait to complete it. Besides, there is nothing saying I'm going to go out and purchase every 'new' version that gets released down the road. I did that with other movies in the past but I'm quickly getting over the hype and don't see myself doing it a lot in the future......
