There was a time where that was not adequate. I don't know if those times have changed, however.

I still think it's a rule that was largely created for OOC reasons that have nothing to do with the established setting in the books.

In the books, they typically wear robes all the time, as I recall, perhaps minus weekends where there are no classes. Like Yendys said, be glad your characters gets to wear anything other than robes.

I remember seeing one of those "The Making of Harry Potter" specials on TV, and they said that in the movies they were going to just have the kids wear their "street clothes" under the robes, since that's how JKR envisioned it in the books. But then they did a screen test with the uniforms, and it just looked so good, they decided to go with it for aesthetic purposes.
